OMICRON - THE STAR!

One of the most interesting stars presents a fine view in early February evenings in the western sky. This is Omicron Ceti, otherwise called Mira, the brightest and nearest (at 820 light years) of the red long-term variables. 1996 marked the 400th anniversary of its discovery.

Omicron Ceti has the rare habit of brightening over a period that is almost exactly 333 days, and reaches a maximum in the 2nd week of March.

It was found in 1596 by a Dutch clergyman named David Fabricius, who later became a pioneer in the use of that new invention, the telescope. He used it keenly to follow the regular brightenings and fadings of Omicron Ceti, and he maight have learnt much more, had he not been murdered in 1617 by a parishioner whom he had accused in a sermon of stealing one of his geese.
